Eversheds female promotions dwindle

As the likes of Slaughter and May get a pat on the back for promoting more women than men to their partnerships, female lawyers at Eversheds probably feel they’ve had a kick in the teeth.

Eversheds matched last year’s record promotion round this year, making 30 associates up to partner, but the proportion of women made up dropped from a third twelve months ago to just 23 per cent.

The difference could be something to do with this year’s focus on growing male-dominated corporate, which saw 13 join the partnership, of whom just two were women.

As discussed in previous posts below, transaction-heavy corporate doesn’t lend itself to a well-rounded work-life balance, which sadly still excludes more women than men. Work/life balance-friendly litigation, by contrast, didn’t feature in this year’s promotions at all.

But as an Eversheds spokesperson was quick to remind us, “overall we still have more female partners than any of the major law firms.”

Next year’s promotion round will need to include more women if that is to remain the case.

Partnership forecast:
Women: overcast
Corporate: sunny
Litigation: cloudy with intermittent sunshine.
