Solicitor-advocate John Mackenzie claims High Court judge Mr Justice Ian Kennedy discriminated against him because he is not a barrister. The judge is refusing to step down from the case despite Mackenzie's accusations of intimidating behaviour, petulance, boredom and terrifying a witness. Mackenzie, who is representing Doug and Patricia Buchanan, inventors of a type of life-saving body armour, says the judge constantly interrupted him, threw down a file, and displayed antipathy towards him from the beginning of the case. Mackenzie says he is now considering stopping being a solicitor-advocate because of his experiences. The Buchanans are suing contractors Ross & Catherall for u6.25m in lost royalties, claiming the manufacturers made the invention knife-proof but not bullet-proof as originally intended.
