Cuatrecasas wins BBVA star in regional push

Cuatrecasas has boosted its Bilbao office with the big-name hire of BBVA’s head of legal services for Spain and Europe Juan Manuel Ruiz Aizpuru.

Ruiz spent more than 30 years at BBVA, which is one of Spain’s largest banks. He joined the litigation department in 1976 and became legal chief for Spain and Europe in 2003.

Ruiz is Cuatrecasas’s third domestic hire this year as the firm moves to reinforce its regional offices with in-house department heads.

In March it hired Luis Murillo as a litigation partner in the Zaragoza office from the Corporación Aragonesa de Radio y Televisión, where he was director of legal affairs.

The firm also boosted its Barcelona office with the hire of Joan Hortalá, previously the chief inspector for the tax authorities in the region.
