What was your first-ever job?
Working on the pleasure boats on the river Fowey in Cornwall. I was brought up by the water and got to know the crews, who took me on when I turned 16.
What was your worst experience as a trainee?
I worried for days after thinking I’d forgotten a pre-completion search on a property. It wasn’t until weeks later that I found I hadn’t needed to do one anyway.
What do you do at weekends?
Gardening and cutting grass. Or if it’s dry, riding a motorbike, gardening and cutting grass.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Probably a track by Abba. I suspect Dancing Queen.
If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?
A long-distance lorry driver. I did this before becoming a solicitor and really enjoyed it.
What’s your favourite film?
The Great Escape. Steve McQueen and motorbikes – what more could you ask for?
Who’s your hero and why?
Sir Ranulph Fiennes. An awe-inspiring individual.
What’s the most exciting case you’ve worked on and why?
A lorry driver needed advice on tachograph infringement. Having paid for my university education doing that I was aware, to the client’s amazement, of how a tachograph worked and the driver’s hours’ regulations. While he had infringed the rules I succeeded in getting him discharged and brought together a number of employees from the company in a group action, brought by the then Ministry of Transport against that firm which succeeded in stopping them from making drivers work over-hours to suit their own needs.
What car do you drive?
A Mercedes E Class, but I also have a motorbike.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what two luxury items would you take?
My iPhone and iPad.
What’s the longest you’ve worked without sleep?
Around 70 hours.
Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
If a movie was being made about your life, who would play you and why?
I’d like it to be Daniel Craig, though sadly there is no similarity.
