Work-Life Quiz – Joanne Gallagher

Joanne Gallagher

What was your worst experience as a trainee?

Being sent to cover a hearing in Croydon County Court with no warning or time to read the file. The district judge was not very happy with our application – she slung the Green Book down the long table to me and suggested I might like to read it. It was awful.

Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?

The pub next door.

What time do you usually leave the office?

Inevitably, I sometimes work long hours, but as technology has improved and we now have the ability to work remotely I try to strike a balance as a working mum.

What do you do at weekends?

As I have a young son, I seem to spend most of the weekend charging around with him playing catch-up from the working week. But when I’m not being mum I love to go out to dinner, watch movies and catch up with friends.

What’s your favourite restaurant?

J Sheekey in Covent Garden.

If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?

A graphic designer.

What’s your favourite film?

Pulp Fiction.

Who’s your hero and why?

My dad. He was such a character and a fantastic businessman. He used to travel the world negotiating contracts to lay submarine cables between continents and always had stories to tell of the people he’d met, be it Margaret Thatcher, the Queen or Saddam Hussein. Bedtime stories were never dull.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Parallel Lines, by Blondie.

What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?

Taking on too much. Delegate.

What book are you reading?

What’s your favourite children’s book?

The Wind in the Willows.

If you were stranded on a desert island what two luxury items would you take?

My iPod and a solar charger so my music would never run out.
