White & Case overhauls associate appraisals

White & Case‘s London office is reviewing its associates’ appraisals system in a bid to reduce attrition and improve career development.

The London executive committee has instructed external consultants on the review in a bid to “to simplify and add value” to the firm’s annual appraisals process for both associates and support staff.

A spokesman for the firm said the review was expected to create clearer definitions of the criteria used for appraisals and to advance its use in career development programs. “We’re re-evaluating our appraisals system. We’re looking at both soft and hard skills,” he said.

It is understood that the office is also looking to expand its associate training programs. The office is currently piloting a course on client pitches and offering senior associates a business development and account management program.

Partners are lobbying for the hire of a full-time spokesperson to represent associates before the executive committee.

However, London senior partner Peter Finlay said the executive committee had not discussed this option, nor was it on the committee’s agenda.
