It’s US promotions season – that happy time of year when eager associates find out if they are to join their firm’s partnerships.
Several US firms have unveiled sizeable promotions rounds this year. White & Case was one of the first off the blocks, making up a total of 37 partners including five in London. Indeed the UK got the most new partners, ahead of New York and Frankfurt which each gained four.
At McDermott Will & Emery, London saw three promotions amid a 33-strong round. Headquarters Chicago got the most new partners – 10 – with a further 15 also promoted in other US cities.
London accounted for a fifth of promotions at Ropes & Gray in an about-turn from 2013, when no City lawyers were made up. Ropes made up five lawyers in Boston, four in London and New York, with the balance of seven promotions in its other US offices as well as Shanghai and Hong Kong.
However Latham & Watkins, despite being deeply embedded in the City, only made up one new partner in London this year. Corporate finance specialist Francesco Lione got the nod in the UK as 18 other lawyers joined Latham’s partnership worldwide.
But not everyone is promoting in London. As turbulence continues at Edwards Wildman Palmer, the firm confirmed it is in a redundancy consultation with one lawyer and four support staff in the UK.
