Trowers & Hamlins senior partner Jonathan Adlington has dismissed claims that top City firms launching in the Middle East pose a threat to the firm’s own local practice.
Adlington made the bullish statement in the July edition of The Lawyer Podcast, which is a radio-style programme available on the internet. It is available to listen to at www.thelawyerpodcast.com or to download on iTunes.
“We’ve been in the Middle East for 25 years and we are delighted for others to join us over there,” Adlington said. “Having professionals on the other side of transactions makes our lives easier.
“We are certainly not being asked to act on both sides which used to happen 25 years ago, so there is enough work for everybody and we are enjoying their presence.”
The comments come as an increasing number of top UK firms launch offerings, or beef up their presences, in the Middle East. For example, Clyde & Co has put the Middle East at the heart of its strategic priorities, with a plan to hire at least 40 lawyers in the region over the next year (The Lawyer, 16 July).
