This is Taylor Joynson Garrett’s second deal for technology company Tornado. Its first was when Tornado instructed the firm to act on its February AIM flotation. Choosing a law firm was aided by the fact that Tornado’s managing director and co-founder Ian Watson is a lawyer – he was previously head of corporate at Sheridans – so knows the legal market.

Although not an exclusive partnership, the deal with EMI is thought to be one of the first of its kind in Europe. The partnership aims to tackle online music piracy. Tornado will provide commercial music downloads on its digital media distribution system via European retail websites of EMI artists. From the legal point of view, it meant that while it was predominately a corporate deal led by Oldridge, the intellectual property practice was also heavily involved.
