Thrifty dealing

Marks & Spencer company secretary and head of corporate governance Graham Oakley seems to have taken the belt-tightening initiatives at the retail giant very seriously.

The avid biker supposedly placed a call to a fellow in-houser in a well-known motor company (and one of the world’s largest motorbike manufacturers) to see if his mate could get him a good deal on his latest motorbike purchase.

With the motor company’s bikes priced from £3,500 to £20,000, who could blame him for trying?Sadly, Oakley eventually purchased his mean machine through a dealer after working out it was cheaper than going in-house.

Pah! What use are friends?
