What’s your most vivid memory from being a trainee?

Assisting the family partner in a case acting on behalf of a father and witnessing a ruling which denied the father any contact with his children until they were of an age to decide for themselves if they wished to have any contact.  It was a disturbing and upsetting case and was the first time I saw the justice system have an impact on day-to-day life in a family setting.

What is the thing in your professional career that has terrified you or taken you out of your comfort zone the most?

Being the driving force behind Azeem Rafiq’s institutional racism complaint against Yorkshire County Cricket Club and bringing an Employment Tribunal Claim within the investigation which was more than two years out of time under the strict time limits which apply to such claims.

This case has been described as the watershed moment which gives sports men and women a platform to speak out about their own experiences of racism without fear of retribution, but it did, for me, take me out of my comfort zone, as I was dealing with emotions and real-life consequences where the outcome of the case could not be predicted.  I was extremely proud of the outcome achieved and this has received a large amount of media coverage.

What is the wisest thing anyone ever said to you (and who said it)?

My dad – if I could afford it, the best form of education for you would be to travel the world.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get to where you are/do the job you do?

Do not be afraid of challenges, obstacles, knock-backs and believe in yourself.

What’s your best friend from law school doing now?

I am married to him!
