The big battles in today’s news

High-profile cases have been rearing their heads this week with Plebgate and the David Miranda case both hitting headlines again as well as news of $3bn of claims filed – and lost – against the Kazakhstan government.

Matrix Chambers – which led in challenging the detention of David Miranda – were on the losing side in a billion-dollar claim against the Kazakhstan government decided this month.

The battle saw Essex Court Chambers’ Toby Landau QC and 3 Verulam Buildings’ Ali Malek QC among others defeat Matrix and Allen & Overy in mammoth arbitrations against the Kazakh government.

The latest instalment of the Plebgate row also hit today’s news, with the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launch of an investigation into claims an officer misled MPs.

Elsewhere, the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald David Miranda appeared in the High Court to challenge his detention, represented by Matrix Chambers’ Matthew Ryder QC and Eddie Craven.
The hearing follows Bindmans’ and Matrix Chambers’ success in securing a partial injunction limiting the examination of documents seized from Miranda in August.
