Music streaming platform SoundCloud has hired the top in-house lawyer from UK mobile app Shazam to lead its legal team.

Antonious Porch has been named as SoundCloud’s new general counsel. He will be based in New York and report to the company’s chief operating officer Michael Weissman.

He joins from Shazam, a British app that is able to identify music based on a short sample played.

Porch has long been based in New York and joined Shazam in 2015 when British-based Bridget Kerle stood down as head of the legal team.

Prior to this, he spent 11 years at TV channel Nickelodeon. His legal career started at Latham & Watkins, before he moved to Morrison & Foerster where he was an associate.

At SoundCloud, Porch replaces Merritt Farren who joined the company just last year from Amazon’s Audible brand. Farren was based in Berlin.

According to data from The Lawyer Market Intelligence (LMI), SoundCloud has sought legal counsel from law firms such as Reed Smith and Brown Rudnick.
