Shorter is sweeter

DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary. Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Well, not to worry – from 1 September the name will be shortened to just DLA Piper. And about time too.

The merger that created DLA Piper took place on 1 January 2005 and since then the rest of us have had to struggle with this marathon of a name. Not that DLA Piper is the only firm. Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom? Is it just us who always forget Slate? And Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton…?
US firms are good at long names, but the Portuguese are the real winners. The undisputed heavyweight champion has to be F Castelo Branco & Associados Veiga Gomes Marques Da Cruz Colmonero Sociedades de Advogados.

In an effort to make everyone’s lives easier, The Lawyer is calling an amnesty. We encourage all law firms that have more names than is healthy, give them up. Please!
