At the conclusion of a hearing between 8 and 23 February 2016 Dr A, a consultant adult
psychiatrist, was cleared of all allegations by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal.

The doctor faced over 40 allegations relating to his assessment, report and evidence given, as an independent expert, to a Mental Health Review Tribunal. It was alleged, inter alia, that the doctor had acted dishonestly in relation to the evidence he gave as an expert witness. All the allegations of fact were dismissed and the doctor was fully exonerated.

The case raised significant issues concerning the role and ambit of evidence provided by independent experts and the expertise required in providing their opinions.

Dr A was represented by Andrew Hockton, instructed by Mark Shaw and Robina Ewbank of BLM.
