Runway activists will not run

The House of Lords is to be asked to consider an appeal by environment protestors against orders that they move out of tree houses, ropewalks and tunnels on National Trust land close to the proposed new runway at Manchester Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority wants to remove some trees and cut others to make the flight approach safe for aircraft when the new, u172m runway is built. Pending the application by the protestors to the Law Lords, the Court of Appeal has stayed an earlier order that they move out. The plan is to have the runway ready for use by the spring of 2000 and Lord Justice Chadwick said that in putting the eviction order on hold, the continued presence of the protestors would not damage the runway timetable.
