It comes just weeks after the firm announced its intention to open in Sydney through the hire of two Herbert Smith Freehills partners Michael Mills and Michelle Fox (10 May 2013).

Rhie, who is a one-time legacy Hebert Smith lawyer – will join the firm as chair of the Asian international arbitration practice. He will be joined in Hong Kong by partner Carey Ramos who is being relocated from New York and will become the senior partners in the office.

The office opening is subject to regulatory approval.

Managing partner John Quinn said: “We’ve been planning the opening of another office in Asia for some time, and of course we would like this to be in Hong Kong, when we get the approvals.”

Quinn added that the Rhie had been the “number one choice” for the firm.

The senior hire comes just weeks after Quinn Emanuel bolstered the London office through the hire of Herbert Smith Freehills heavyweight Ted Greeno (27 March 2013).

In February, the firm revealed an 18 per cent increase in gross revenues, taking global turnover to a record $852.5m (7 February 2013).
