Private function

The Middle Temple Annual Dinner is almost upon us and inevitably the all-star event will generate the usual oodles of gossip.

Keeping order this year, though, will be BBC’s News at One presenter and Honorary Bencher Anna Ford. The media legend will be after-dinner speaking along with Lord Justice Scott Baker, Master Treasurer of Middle Temple, on no doubt the many topical media-related issues of the day.

Perhaps, as a BBC journalist, Ford will regale the audience with tales relating to the importance of the independence of the media. Or she may decide to comment on privacy, given the success of Naomi Campbell’s action in the Lords and Ms Ford’s own experience in this regard. Remember in 2001 the doughty newsreader bravely fought a sterling battle on behalf of celebrities’ right to privacy after the Daily Mail and OK! Magazine published photos of her sunbathing on holiday in Majorca the previous summer.

What is certain is that any bad behaviour will be met with a stern response from ‘Master’ Anna. For this is none other than the lady who threw a glass of wine over Tory sleaze-meister Jonathan Aitken a long time before anyone else realised how much of a lying bastard he really was. The incident hit the headlines and confirmed Ford’s reputation for belligerence.

Thursday should be an interesting night.
