Portners launches property litigation

West End property boutique Portner and Jaskel has launched a specialist property litigation department with the hire of a team from the London office of Morgan Cole.

As first reported by The Lawyer on 6 October 2003, Portners took on land-lord and tenant specialist Jonathan Cantor. Since then, the firm has brought on board fellow Morgan Cole partner Leslie Gascoigne and a team of five assistants.

Cantor and Gascoigne were formerly partners at Binks Sterns, the niche London property practice that merged with Morgan Bruce in 1994, prior to the latter’s merger with Cole & Cole in 1998.
Although Portners has been a niche property firm since 1975, this is the first time that it has had property litigation capability.

“We’ve decided that we need to have strength and depth,” said senior partner Harvey Jaskel.

Last year, the firm also took on two partners from Evans Dodd – Joseph Hyde, who joined as a consultant in the firm’s property department, and Jeremy Hershkorn to lead and develop the commercial lit-igation practice.

The company commercial department was also bolstered by the arrival of Mike Gregory, who was formerly a partner at South African firm Routledge-Modise.

As well as its property, the firm also has a specialist claimant personal injury unit that it launched in 1996.

The firm now has seven partners and offices in London and Wales.
