If you have to make a phone call to Linklaters in Portugal next week, don’t bother. There’ll be no one there.
Tulkinghorn, as readers will remember, has a strong affinity with the Portuguese approach to work. He is warmed to hear that Linklaters, the epitome of the hardworking Anglo-Saxon magic circle firm, has come round to the Portuguese way of doing things.
To celebrate its fifth anniversary in the country it is taking all of its staff on holiday for a week. The location? Dubai. Well, you can’t have everything.
Meanwhile, Tulkinghorn hears the official party for the anniversary was held in a gallery with capacity for 1,500 people. Unfortunately there were two other headline parties going on in Lisbon that night and attendees at Linklaters’ function numbered 50.
We hear that David Cheyne and Tony Angel were particularly bemused to be shown around the gallery by one of the more exuberant guests, Simmons & Simmons senior partner for Portugal Pedro Rebelo de Sousa.
When asked what he was doing there, Rebelo de Sousa replied: “To steal your clients.”
One onlooker tells Tulkinghorn: “He wasn’t joking.”
