Litigation boutique Baker & Partners has become the first organisation to offer an offshire pupillage.

One of the firm’s advocates, Charlie Sorensen, completed a pupillage this year, and Baker & Partners has now won approval from the Bar Standards Board to offer one each year in the future, beginning in 2017.

The firm will provide the first six in Jersey with three partners acting as pupil supervisors, and has teamed up with Chancery commercial chambers XXIV Old Buildings, which will provide the second six in London.

Senior partner Stephen Baker said: “Our focus with the pupillages is to prepare the next generation of offshore litigators who are also qualified and practising English barristers. Through enabling barristers in their last stages of training to gain experience of both the courts of Jersey and the courts of England, we open up the path to offshore practice to many talented lawyers. I’m delighted that Baker & Partners can offer this opportunity.”

Steven Thompson QC of XXIV Old Buildings added: “We are delighted to be working alongside Baker & Partners to offer this innovative pupillage, which will provide substantial opportunities to lawyers looking to ensure they are best prepared to appear before the Jersey courts. By integrating both onshore and offshore in their final stage of training, barristers will gain a unique perspective and invaluable experience, which will form a strong basis for their legal career.”
