Michael Duck QC, Leader of the Midland Circuit, has convicted Paul Emmerson of the murder of Mohammed Miah. Emmerson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. Mr Duck QC, prosecuting, told Birmingham Crown Court that Emmerson, 38, held onto pedestrian Mr Miah by the strap of his shoulder bag as he drove his Volkswagen Caddy through West Bromwich town centre.
The attack, in the early hours of March 17, 2018, took place after the two men – who were unknown to each other – were seen to exchange words outside the Prince of Wales pub in George Street. Mr Miah, from Tipton, was dragged more than 150 metres up the High Street before falling from the vehicle, suffering catastrophic head injuries. The 22-year-old had been held at the side of the moving vehicle and eventually fell as it passed through a red traffic light at the junction of High Street and Trinity Way. CCTV footage showed Emmerson speeding away without stopping after Mr Miah fell. Paramedics treated Mr Miah at the scene before taking him to hospital, but he died later that day. Emmerson, of Kemp Road, Kitts Green, had denied murder, and claimed he felt threatened by Mr Miah.
