Two counsel from No5 Barristers’ Chambers are part of the defence team in a murder trial following the deaths of five people in an explosion at a shop in Leicester.

It is claimed that Aram Kurd, Hawkar Hassan and Arkan Ali had hoped to claim a £300,000 insurance payout after the explosion, which destroyed the Zabka shop on Hinckley Road last February and the flat above.

Jo Sidhu QC and Tom Schofield are acting for Aram Kurd in the trial, which is being heard at Leicester Crown Court.

Mary Ragoobar and two of her sons, Shane and Sean Ragoobeer, were killed along with Shane’s girlfriend, Leah Reek, in the flat above. Shop worker Viktorija Ijevleva also died.

Mr Kurd, 34, of Hillary Place, Braunstone, Leicester, Mr Hassan, 33, of no fixed address, and Mr Ali, 37, of Drake Close in Oldham, each deny five charges of murder, five charges of manslaughter and a charge of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

The trial continues.
