News from the court steps

It happened last year with the £1bn Cherney v Deripaska dispute, and Boris Berezovsky also settled a raft of claims against the estate of Arkady ‘Badri’ Patarkatsishvili last year.

This week it was the turn of Britain’s richest man, Lakshmi Mittal, who settled his dispute with Manmohan Varma on Tuesday. News broke on the day the hearing was due to begin.

The case shared a number of similarities with last year’s ‘oligarchs’ litigation. Like Berezovsky, Cherney and Deripaska the litigants in Varma v Mittal are vastly wealthy, controlling huge business empires. But, like Berezovsky’s lawyers Addleshaw Goddard, RPC had agreed to run Varma’s claim against Mittal on a conditional fee basis.

The Mittal case was also featured in our Top 20cases this year. Luckily for avid court watchers, there are plenty of claims left that haven’t settled. Yet.
