Berwin Leighton is launching a “virtual” information and communications technology department.
Berwin Leighton's new department consists of a team of six partners and 16 assistants scattered throughout the firm's departments, and is due to formally launch this month.
Corporate department head Quentin Solt says: “We wondered about having all our IT lawyers sit together but felt that would mean them missing out on the support of their departments so we opted for a horizontal arrangement.”
Solt says the department of 12 clients is linked by email as well as meetings.
The firm is believed to be the first to launch a virtual IT department, although Taylor Joynson Garrett's life science department exists in “virtual” form.
