US firm Goldberg Segalla is to launch in London next month after hiring reinsurance heavyweight Clive O’Connell.

Move of the week

O’Connell formerly headed Barlow Lyde & Gilbert’s commercial risk and reinsurance practice, but left the firm in November last year following
its merger with Clyde & Co.

He will lead Goldberg Segalla’s London office, although it is unclear whether there will be further partner hires. The new office will be based in the hub of London’s insurance district, at No 1 Cornhill.


O’Melveny & Myers partner Justin Stock has joined the London office of Morrison & Foerster as a partner in its corporate practice.

Winckworth Sherwood has strengthened its London real estate team with the appointment of partner Richard Perkins, formerly a real estate partner at Reed Smith, and senior solicitor Gemma Mills from Nabarro. They join the firm’s property litigation team, while senior solicitor Rafe Courage joins the development team from Eversheds.

Bond Pearce has recruited environment partner Georgie Messent from Burges Salmon, where she was a partner in the environment unit and head of the firm’s emissions trading and carbon law team.

Exeter-headquartered Michelmores has beefed up its London presence with the hire of a partner and senior associate. Institutional property specialist Paul Paling joins as a partner to lead the firm’s London commercial property team. Paling joins from Nabarro, where he was appointed as a partner in May 2007. Also joining is former Silverman Sherliker IP chief Dennis Lee, who has been appointed as an associate.

Macfarlanes has made an addition to its corporate practice with the hire of Addleshaw Goddard partner James Dawson.


Shakespeares has announced the appointment of a new insurance partner at the firm’s Birmingham office. Corporate insurance solicitor Craig Wallace joins from Plexus Law in Manchester. The firm has also appointed Guildhall Chambers chief executive Hamish Munro as commercial director as it pushes to hit a turnover of £50m by the 2012-13 year-end.


Keoghs has appointed Darrell Smith as a partner in its expanding disease team. Smith joins from Berrymans Lace Mawer, where he focused on asbestos-related cancer claims.

Davis Blank Furniss has appointed Anita Shepherd as a family solicitor and collaborative lawyer. She joins from Glaisyers.

The newly opened North West office of Darbys has welcomed two senior lawyers from Pannone’s Hale office, which is closing. Alison Barnett joins as a director in the family team and Judith Chesters as a director in the private client team.

Pannone has lost construction partner Kevin Connell to Stockport-based Gorvins, which in turn has recruited Daniel Woodcock from Birchall Blackburn, where he was head of commercial property.


Jones Day has announced the hire of Renato Antonini, who will lead the firm’s international trade practice in Brussels. He was previously at Van Bael & Bellis as a partner specialising in trade and competition law.

Four lawyers have joined Hogan Lovells from DLA Piper in Rome. The team will be led by business restructuring partner Ernesto Apuzzo, with associates Alessandra Dima and Francesco Gallo as well as trainee Michela Palombi.


Caroline Kennedy has joined Kaufman Dolowich Voluck & Gonzo as of counsel in the firm’s insurance and employment practice. She joins from CMS CameronMcKenna’s London office, where she was a solicitor.

DLA Piper has hired Richard Reilly as a partner in its global investments funds practice, based in the New York office. He was formerly global co-head of White & Case’s securitisation group and partner in its London investment funds practice.

Weil Gotshal & Manges has bolstered its global finance capabilities with John Cobb joining the New York office as partner in the capital markets group. He joins from Dewey & LeBoeuf, where he was also a partner. He has expertise in leveraged loan and capital markets transactions.


Litigator Richard Mereine has joined HWL Ebsworth as a partner in its Sydney office, leaving a similar role at Clayton Utz.

Simmons & Simmons has appointed corporate partner Vivien Yang to its energy and infrastructure practice in Hong Kong. She was head of natural resources for Clifford Chance in Hong Kong.

Susandarini & Partners and Norton Rose in Australia have announced that Tasdikiah Siregar will join the Indonesia practice as a banking and finance partner, leaving Indonesian firm Makarim & Taira S.


Senior commercial litigator Elaine Gray will join Carey Olsen’s Guernsey litigation and dispute resolution group next month. Gray moves from AO Hall where she was a partner.

Cayman Islands firm Ogier has appointed a new partner as head of litigation. Richard de Lacy QC built a reputation in commercial litigation and insolvency while at 3 Stone Buildings.

Exchange Chambers has welcomed crime and regulatory proceedings specialist Steven Crossley to its Leeds office from Yorkshire neighbour St Pauls Chambers. Meanwhile, Pankaj Madan has joined the same set from 12 King’s Bench Walk and serious crime specialist Imran Shafi has joined from No 6 Chambers.

Matrix Chambers has hit rival set Doughty Street Chambers for human rights silk Richard Hermer QC.


White & Case London-based partner Mark Glengarry is set to join Morgan Stanley as a managing director in its investment banking division. Glengarry joined White &Case in 2003 and was promoted to partner in 2009.
