If there is anyone endeavouring to right the wrongs of Britain’s biggest miscarriage of justice, it is Doughty Street’s Tim Moloney QC. In 2021, Moloney led the counsel team which convinced the Court of Appeal to quash the criminal convictions of 39 former sub-postmasters wrongly prosecuted by the Post Office for theft, fraud and false accounting caused by its Horizon IT shortfalls.

The landmark ruling that followed paved the way for around 70 individuals to clear their names – 60 of whom he represented. Criminal appeals are expected to continue until mid-2022, with around 30 more hoping to overturn their life-changing convictions.

Those individuals will now seek further justice through this year’s statutory Post Office inquiry, which will determine who else shares accountability for the scandal – including government bodies, tech provider Fujitsu and the lawyers. As counsel to many ex-sub-postmaster core participants, Moloney’s mission is to help the vindicated speak their truth, and to get honest answers from those who have attempted to conceal it.
