James Morgan

James Morgan is a Managing Director and the Co-General Counsel for EMEA at MUFG. He has co-run the Legal Department in EMEA since August 2019. He jointly manages a team of approximately 75 lawyers based in ten countries in the region with oversight over transactional and non-transactional legal work including litigation, investigations, regulatory matters, HR legal issues and corporate governance.
James has been with the bank for eight years and prior to his appointment as Co-General Counsel has held a variety of roles within the Legal Department, including as Head of the Primary Markets and Sales & Trading teams which included responsibility for overseeing, managing and assisting in the providing of corporate lending, trade finance, transaction banking, capital markets, and derivatives, repo and cash business lines. Prior to this role, James was a Director in the Advisory and Regulatory Change Legal team at MUFG, covering markets-focused regulatory reform implantation, group strategic projects, intragroup tax arrangements and litigation.
James has worked in the legal and financial sector since 2005. He started his career as a solicitor in Slaughter and May’s finance group. Following that, James worked as a lawyer at Citigroup Global Markets Limited for three years, before taking the role of Legal Director at NYSE Euronext from 2012-2013.
James holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Bristol University, and a post-graduate diploma in Legal Practice from Oxford University and Oxford Brookes (Joint Honours). James is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales, and is also qualified to practice law in the Republic of Ireland.
James has been able to develop a vast portfolio from his legal practice within the financial services sector having covered litigation, commercial lending, tax-efficient financing and insolvency and restructuring to name a few.
