Creating a free legal timebank: Why your achievements need to benefit society more than ever before

About

One of the more dire consequences of the pandemic is the current backlog in courts and the huge constraints on the justice system, leading to years of delays and growing human rights concerns and numerous charities unable to support those most in need.

The legal profession is there to provide good quality advice yet important parts of it are breaking down now. There has never been a more pressing time to give something back.

As experts, advisors, business partners and professionals is now the time we need to use our legal education, expertise, knowledge and understanding to help those who need it the most?

How do we ensure advice is given to the people who really need it? At what point should lawyers begin to give back or even be required to give back? How can your achievements benefit society more generally and why you should get involved?

Should the profession start talking about creating a legal equivalent to national service, whereby lawyers dedicate a certain number of hours to helping the criminal justice sector or volunteering at a legal advice charity, whereby from a societal point of view, we are less well-served?  What could you and your team do?  How could you and your network make a difference by collaborating and being the change, we need to see?
