Merger leads to Bedfordshire's biggest firm

Bedfordshire commercial firms Gareth Woodfine & Partners and Batcheldors have merged to create the largest firm in the county.

The new practice, Woodfine Batcheldor, will have 16 partners and 43 other fee earners.

Senior partner at the merged firm Nicolas Davies said that it was now in a position to expand into other markets.

He said that the firm – with existing offices in Bedford, Kempston and Sandy – was targeting Milton Keynes, Northampton and Cambridge as potential areas for new offices or a further merger.

Davies explained that Batcheldors – which had five partners – was an attractive merger partner as it had greater expertise in private client work, advising a number of high net-worth individuals, which would complement Woodfines' commercial strength.

Two partners from Batcheldors – Michael Cox and Neil Hickman – will join the new management board headed by Davies, who was senior partner at Woodfines.

There will be no redundancies and the Batcheldors team will move into Woodfines' offices in Bedford from its existing Bedford office.

The merger took effect from 6 April.
