McDermott Withers double

Here’s an unusual one for a US firm. McDermott Will & Emery, snubbing the more usual trend for purely corporate, finance or at a push, international arbitration, has just hired a private client partner for its London office, bringing in partner Ziva Robertson from mega private client firm Withers.

Well, we say unusual. Actually Robertson is the second Withers private client partner to join McDermott in the past year. Her arrival follows that of Astrid Owen, who left for the US firm in October.

It looks like a dose of good news for McDermott, but these are interesting times for Withers, or Withers Bergman as it’s known stateside. May saw it call off a potential merger with Speechly Bircham while the same month saw the appointment of its first-ever US chairman in the form of New York boss Ivan Sacks.

At the time sources suggested that incoming chairman Sacks was pro-merger and that the deal had garnered support from Withers Bergman partners.

Possibly not from everybody.
