McCarthy Tétrault expands in London

CANADIAN firm McCarthy Tétrault has expanded its City office, adding a project finance partner to boost its expanding AIM-focused work.

The former co-head of the project finance group at Hunton & Williams Mark Frewin joins the firm to focus on mining, oil, gas and energy projects. McCarthy has also recruited Trowers & Hamlins associate Paul Airley, who specialises in corporate finance and M&A.

“We’re recognising by hiring Mark and Paul that this is not a passing fad; and whether it’s Canadian companies or others, there’s a real market for AIM work. We have no aspirations to be a full-service office, but there is a niche here where we can do well,” UK managing partner Rob Brant said.

Brant said the firm’s work continued to be linked heavily to equity finance for small and mid-capital market Canadian companies. The hires bring the number of partners in the UK office to three, and UK lawyers now outnumber Canadians in the office for the first time.
