Partners at Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw (MBRM) have emerged as the most productive in France, bringing in almost €6m (£3.93m) worth of business each last year.
The firm made €23m (£15.06m), with Paris partners billing an average of €5.75m (£3.77m). The firm also has the fifth-largest revenue per lawyer at €696,000 (£456,000).
Figures compiled by French magazine Decideurs show that foreign firms are getting the most out of their Paris arms by keeping partner numbers down and associate numbers up.
The average partner at a top 30 firm in Paris has a book of business worth €2.6m (£1.7m) and works with a team of around five associates.
Despite higher turnovers, the major French firms do not match the Anglo-Saxon model for partner productivity.
Only eight French firms appear in the French top 30 by revenue per partner (RPP), with the magic circle and Wall Street heavyweights dominating the rest of the table.
IP boutique Hirsch & Associés is the only domestic firm to feature in the top 10. The firm’s four partners made €21.1m (£13.82m), working out at €5.6m (£3.67m) each.
Hirsch’s leverage and revenue is similar to that of Debevoise & Plimpton‘s, MBRM’s and Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom’s. Their partners operate in teams of between seven and eight associates for maximum fee-earning potential.
The magic circle firms, although much larger, run a similar structure. Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters all make it into the top 10, with Allen & Overy placed 12 for RPP.
Freshfields has the largest Paris office of the UK top four, turning over more than €100m (£65.49m) a year and making it one of the biggest in France.
Other UK firms to make it into the French top 30 include Ashurst, Lovells and Simmons & Simmons. Herbert Smith just misses out with an RPP of €1.58m (£1.03m).
France’s largest firm, the €266m (£174.2m) Fidal, failed to make it into the table as its 278 partners bring in less than €1m (£655,000) each.
