Mayer Brown to go CV-blind

If you were asked to sketch a picture of a lawyer, chances are you’d draw a white man in a grey suit. The stereotypical image of the profession isone that favours primarily Anglo-Saxon middle class graduates who move, like a shoal of well-heeled fish, from private school to Oxbridge to the City.

But in a bid to prove that the profession is increasingly more about skills rather than schooling, Mayer Brown is set to launch a CV-blind policy for its next trainee intake. In these graduate interviews, the interviewer won’t know which university or school the candidate attended.

It follows Clifford Chance’s decision to launch a CV-blind method for recruiting graduates. The magic circle firm – the only one willing to use such a policy – has tripled its intake of black, Pakistani and Bangladeshi candidates in two years.

With independent school students 55 times more likely to win an Oxbridge place and 22 times more likely to go to a top-ranked university than a state school student from a low-income household, it’s a move in the right direction.
