Lincoln's Inn is facing embarrassment as builders working on a multi-million pound chambers refurbishment threaten action over alleged breaches of employment legislation.
Nearly 50 builders working on refits at four, five and six New Square Chambers claim they have not received their holiday entitlement.
And they are threatening to chain themselves to railings at Lincoln's Inn if the labour dispute is not settled.
Michael Dooley, of construction union UCATT says: “We will take direct action if necessary.”
A Lincoln's Inn official dealing with the refurbishment says he is satisfied the main contractor Mowlem is behaving properly.
“The dispute is between a sub-contractor of Mowlem and its workforce,” says Morgan Lear, Lincoln Inn's deputy under-treasurer. “I am watching the situation carefully.
“We would not want to be seen to be supporting any organisation that was known to be breaking the law.”
Dooley says: “Lincoln's Inn should, considering who they are, do their uttermost to ensure the law of the land applies in their backyard.”
