Poll of the Day

Staff at Simmons & Simmons have been asked to vote on whether they want to take a 20 per cent pay cut for up to six months or not, with a corresponding reduction in hours. Should they have been asked to vote on this decision?

Pic of the Day

“I thought I’d submit an example of one of the things our group is doing to keep up engagement and to keep connected,” Peter Tolson of Allen & Overy writes: “The projects group at A&O has an impressive 80+ WhatsApp group where we run competitions, quizzes, a version of your “replicate this famous painting”, or “pick your favourite child” (that last one is a joke…) and much more. We also keep up our ‘cake Friday’ with a virtual ‘WFH Cake Friday’.  Each week our colleagues squeeze in time around home schooling, working and the odd bit of DIY to get baking for our Friday cake time slot of 4pm. Then it is time to pour a cuppa, sit back and watch as everyone posts bakes that are better than your own.”

“The only issue is you can’t taste them… but having seen some of the process pictures and many of the failures, you don’t always want to.”

Don’t worry – we’ve already asked Peter for some painting recreations. And a reminder that you can also send us your recipes to the usual place.

Dog of the Day

Jessica Barnes, a clerk at One Essex Court, writes: “Our new family member, Lenny Barnes, arrived just a few weeks ago and is now the newest pet addition to the One Essex Court clerks’ room! You will be pleased to know Lenny is making regular appearances on the daily zoom calls! Here is a picture of him – it is surprising what a puppy will do for some chicken…”

“This is my puppy, Rusty, says Hill Dickinson paralegal Emma King. “He’s an eight-week old Cavapoo & would love to be featured in your ‘Dog of the day’ section of your Law Against Loneliness blog!”

You’re good, but are you featured-in-The-Lawyer-at-eight-weeks-old good?

Podcast of the Day

How Did This Get Made?

No subtlety to this one: How Did This Get Made is a podcast about terrible movies. The episode below focuses on the bonkers 2004 Hugh Jackman vehicle Van Helsing.

Get involved

Anyone in the legal sector is welcome to contribute to any of the sections of Law Against Loneliness.

Here is how to contribute to a few of the regular features we have run so far.  Everything can be sent to richard.simmons@thelawyer.com.

Video of the day

What we want are individual, personal contributions from lawyers and legal sector professionals working from home. You could be demonstrating a recipe, videoing your daily run, telling a joke, singing us a song, showing off a skill, or just telling us about your day and what you’ve been up to. We are very open to creativity – anything that uplifts or diverts.

What we don’t want is too many firm-branded videos talking about how seamlessly you have transitioned to a new way of working, please.

The Lawyer Listens

Contributors should send us a YouTube link and 100 words about the song in the style of previous entries.

Dog of the day

Self-explanatory. Send us dog pix. Or cats, ponies, rabbits, budgies etc. Don’t forget to let us know their name and give us a line of detail too if you’d like.
