Lawyers Against LonelinessThe Lawyer Fringe Festival

Creatives are having a hard time of it at the moment so we want to publicise their work during lockdown. If you’ve got a recommendation of a creative business doing something that lawyers can support, let us know at the usual email address.

The Insiders

If you’re a fan of escape rooms, why not try The Insiders, a new experience from the Reading-based escape room Deadlocked?

Dubbed as an ‘escape room experience at home’, for only £9.99 you get three ‘episodes’ and hours worth of enjoyment. You can play alone or in a team across Skype or Zoom – in fact it’s perfect for your next online work social.

Mental health webcast: submit your questions

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and next Thursday afternoon we will be running a webcast entitled Mind Your Head: What I wish I’d known about Anxiety, Depression and Wellbeing. It will be hosted by Andrew Wells, an associate at Herbert Smith Freehills.

He’ll talk about his own personal experiences of mental ill health, how he recovered and what he has learned from his experiences.

You will be able to register shortly but if you want to leave questions for Andrew to address at the end of his talk, please email them in confidence to the usual place, or anonymously here.

Video of the Day

WFW legal PA Rachel King sang alongside a staggering 275 members of her choir, London City Voices to record their own version of Carole King’s, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ from their homes for Women’s Aid Federation of England. They have now raised over £42,000.

Podcast of the Day

Reply All is a podcast broadly about the minutiae of the internet. Start with episode 158, The Case of the Missing Hit. A man in California is haunted by the memory of a 1990s pop song. He can remember the lyrics and the melody. But the song itself has vanished, completely scrubbed from the internet. Did it ever really exist?

Dogs of the Day

Christie Guimond of White & Case writes: “While some people panic bought toilet roll, I panic-bought a puppy…” This is Hershey at 12 weeks old.

And from LawRocks founder Nick Child: “Charlie (right) and Lola (left – when you have five children this is what happens to your dogs’ names).”

“Charlie likes to think he is a big dog, even though he is not a big dog (I hope he doesn’t read this). Lola suffers her little brother, but only just. Charlie’s favourite thing is to bite his big sisters ears. Lola’s favourite thing is to work out how to lure Charlie into the path of a combined harvester somewhere on the farm that they live on. But generally they are brilliant to have around.”

Yesterday’s quiz answers

Theme: Hidden law firms

Once I publicly defended eight rowers with masterful brightness; they were even travelling from Notting Hill Gate – Leyton, quite a discovery given how far Leyton is. I wonder (in German or Glasgow lingo) if a female’s laughter overawes single men, even with their hair windswept like Heathcliff or Darcy. If ever she’d stop, this might produce surprising odd ardour with ersatz charm.  Should a hedgehog and sherbert lemons, scampi, perhaps with lamb, urge someone to barbecue, or at least char wood?  Not for the squeamish. Get involved

Anyone in the legal sector is welcome to contribute to any of the sections of Law Against Loneliness.

Here is how to contribute to a few of the regular features we have run so far.  Everything can be sent to richard.simmons@thelawyer.com.

Video of the day

What we want are individual, personal contributions from lawyers and legal sector professionals working from home. You could be demonstrating a recipe, videoing your daily run, telling a joke, singing us a song, showing off a skill, or just telling us about your day and what you’ve been up to. We are very open to creativity – anything that uplifts or diverts.

What we don’t want is too many firm-branded videos talking about how seamlessly you have transitioned to a new way of working, please.

The Lawyer Listens

Contributors should send us a YouTube link and 100 words about the song in the style of previous entries.

Dog of the day

Self-explanatory. Send us dog pix. Or cats, ponies, rabbits, budgies etc. Don’t forget to let us know their name and give us a line of detail too if you’d like.
