Klevan takes over brief in West case

MANCHESTER-based barrister Rodney Klevan QC has been instructed by alleged serial killer Fred West.

Klevan, who defended former Liverpool Council deputy leader Derek Hatton, is a recorder of the Crown Court and leader of the Northern Circuit. He has been head of chambers at Manchester's 18 St John Street since 1990. A bencher of Gray's Inn, Klevan was called to the Bar in 1966 and appointed as QC in 1984.

West and his wife Rosemary are jointly accused of murdering nine females. Remains of the bodies were found buried in the house and garden of their Gloucester home.

Klevan will also represent West on charges of murdering his first wife, their eight-year-old daughter, and their teenage nanny.

Committal proceedings are expected to take place in Gloucester next month, and it is likely the trial will start in the autumn.
