Jeffs, Claire – Hot 100

The latest competition star to emerge from Slaughter and May is senior associate Claire Jeffs.

This year she advised Cemex SA on the competition aspects of its monstrously complicated merger with UK ready-mixed concrete giant RMC Group – the biggest ever transaction involving a Mexican company.

Jeffs was also instrumental in squeaking through one of the biggest deals of 2003 – the Carlton-Granada merger. She led for Carlton on part of the transaction when Slaughters partner Laura Carstensen had to go off sick.

Carstensen, one of Slaughters’ more high-profile partners, quit the firm last year citing lifestyle reasons. The loss of Carstensen, who ironically headed up Slaughters’ own lifestyle committee, was a blow for the firm.

Luckily for Slaughters, Jeffs is a shoo-in for Carstensen. She is the assistant most other competition practices would like to poach. Unfortunately for them, it cannot be too long before she makes partner.
