Eric Emerson, a partner in Steptoe’s international trade and investment practice, has relocated from the Washington-based firm’s hometown to become managing partner of the Beijing office.
The US firm has also brought in Susan Munro, an English-qualified solicitor and non-practicing barrister who recently joined Steptoe as a partner from the Shanghai office of O’Melveny & Myers.
Emerson, who has been with Steptoe for 18 years and advises companies on all types of international trade issues, said the firm’s decision to open in Beijing reflected its longstanding commitment to the Asia market.
“Steptoe will provide advice to companies participating in the Chinese market as well as Chinese companies doing business beyond China’s borders,” Emerson added.
Steptoe’s chairman Roger Warin said the firm’s track record serving US and international clients with Asian business interests provided a “strong foundation” on which to build in Beijing.
“This new office will enhance our ability to provide services to multinational companies operating in China as well as Chinese companies expanding beyond the People’s Republic of China,” Warin added.
