Tomlinson, whose start date is yet to be confirmed, will be tasked with building standalone legal and secretariat functions ahead of RBS Insurance’s divestment from RBS Group.

He is the second RSA lawyer to join an RBS-related business in recent months. In the summer RSA group general counsel Mark Chambers joined payment processing company WorldPay, which was spun out of RBS at the end of last year, as legal chief.

Tomlinson has 20 years’ experience advising on corporate and commercial matters, legal risk management and corporate governance issues, both with RSA and in his previous role as a lawyer at Ashurst.

In a statement RBS Insurance insurance director John Reizenstein said: “[Tomlinson’s] an experienced transactional lawyer with high technical ability and wide experience. We’re continuing to attract talent to RBS Insurance and build capability at all levels.”

Meanwhile, RSA Insurance Group has named Charlotte Heiss as Tomlinson’s replacement as head of group legal.

Heiss  is currently legal counsel in the group legal team. She has been at RSE since February 2010, having joined from Linklaters, where she was a managing associate in the firm’s corporate department.

In a statement RSA group general counsel Derek Walsh said: “I’m extremely pleased that Charlotte has been promoted and I’m confident that she will bring her energy and enthusiasm to this role as much as she does with her current one.”

Heiss begins her now role on 1 November.
