The CMS network is expanding its reach into Portugal with 14-partner local firm Rui Pena Arnaut & Associados (RPA) poised to become a member.
As of 1 January 2012 the firm will be known as CMS Rui Pena & Arnaut (CMS RPA) following a decision by CMS’s executive committee on 21 October.
Since signing a formal cooperation in October 2010, CMS and Lisbon-headquartered RPA have been working together on client matters and on forging a wider Iberian growth strategy.
“This adds an important jurisdiction to our European growth strategy,” said CMS chairman Cornelius Brandi in a statement.
José Luís Arnaut, founding partner of RPA, said: “Since 1964, we’ve been building a strong brand in the Portuguese market. Joining CMS means we can continue to build on that work and on reinforcing our Iberian strategy, while overnight becoming a European powerhouse.”
This latest development means CMS now has 10 member firms, with 55 offices across 30 countries. The RPA announcement follows moves that saw CMS’s operations expand to Luxembourg (14 December 2010) and Albania (19 April 2011).
CMS member firms include: CMS Adonnino Ascoli & Cassavola Scamoni (Italy); CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo (Spain); CMS Bureau Francis Lefebvre (France); CMS Cameron McKenna LLP (UK); CMS DeBacker (Belgium); CMS Derks Star Busmann (Netherlands); CMS von Erlach Henrici Ltd (Switzerland); CMS Hasche Sigle (Germany) and CMS Reich-Rohrwig Hainz (Austria).
