Pitch perfect?

Just when it seemed that bank of Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) couldn’t underwrite another big-hitter, out comes the cheque book.

The Manchester City of the legal league has been mopping up major players left, right and centre, adding former Teacher Stern sports and media litigator Graham Shear (see story).

Just like the high profile clients that Shear advises in the Premiership (see story), BLP has had a busy summer of transfer activity.

Recent major signings of late include Clifford Chance litigator Nicholas Fletcher, Allen & Overy leveraged finance partner Andrew Bamber and former Kirkland & Ellis private equity partner Raymond McKeeve.

These and other hires have caused mumblings about whether a two-tier partnership is emerging of magic circle-esque partners and home-grown partners, with varying packages to match.

In a difficult year, making sure the new recruits don’t unbalance the team will be a task for managing partner Neville Eisenberg.
