Macfarlanes promotes just one in depleted round of promos

Macfarlanes has become the latest firm to cut the number of new partners it has made up with just one associate being promoted.

Camilla Barry will join the ranks of Macfarlanes pension partners next week.

Last year, the City firm made up two new partners, down from a total of five in 2008. This year’s single promotion means no new M&A partners have been made up in two years.

Barry’s appointment takes the partner headcount in Macfarlanes’ pensions team to four, led by practice head Hugh Arthur.

Macfarlanes senior partner Charles Martin said: “Understanding and managing pensions risk is an increasingly important issue for business, and the regulatory environment becomes ever more complex. Pensions issues are often central to M&A transactions. Companies and trustees are looking for experience and judgement as well as technical skills in navigating these difficult waters. We’re delighted to be bringing a lawyer of Camilla’s talent into the partnership.”

Denton Wilde Sapte today also announced a cut in its partner promotion numbers, with just two being made up in this year’s round (27 April 2010).
