The magic circle firm, which was hit by the departure of three partners to Herbert Smith earlier this year (28 April 2009), has hired Francisco Malaga from Cuatrecasas to head its Spanish litigation practice, with a view to targeting the growing interest in litigation and insolvency advice.
Garrigues has launched a restructuring and insolvency practice led by business restructuring and insolvency expert Antonio Fernandez. This is the first major strategic initiative implemented by the firm’s new joint managing partners Fernando Vives and Ricardo Gomez-Barreda, who began running the firm this month (20 July 2009).
Meanwhile, two of the partners at Nabarro’s former Spanish alliance firm Rodes y Sala have moved on to Brosetta Abogados, following Rodes’ merger with fellow Catalan firm Gomez Acebo y Pombo.
Head of corporate finance Julio Veloso and tax partner Javier Morera have joined Broseta as partners, leaving the number of Rodes legacy partners at Gomez at just two.
Gomez absorbed Rodes in July, prompting Rodes to exit Nabarro’s European alliance. However, Nabarro has maintained that it had always worked with Gomez and would continue to do so (30 June 2009).
