Langstaff J named as head of Employment Appeals Tribunal

Mr Justice Langstaff has been appointed head of the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge.

Langstaff J will succeed Mr Justice Underhill, who completes his term in office at the end of the year.

The former Cloisters Chambers chief joined the EAT in 2000 and in 2005 was appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division (QBD) of the High Court bench.

In the last year he has been involved in determining the outcome of some pivotal legal cases. In February Langstaff J blocked a compensation bid brought by prisoners barred from voting in last year’s general election.

In June he gave permission for barrister Aisha Bijlani to appeal her case against chambers 4 New Square for race and disability discrimination (27 June 2011).
