Lance Sapsford: Addleshaw Goddard

What time do you start work each day? It varies – sometimes travel means a pre-6am start, sometimes taking the kids to school means not getting in until 10am.

Name: Lance Sapsford
Firm: Addleshaw Goddard
Position: Business development director
Lives: Kew

What’s the most boring thing you’ve been asked to do in your job?

It’s all new so far as I’ve just taken on the BD director role – no time to get bored.

How much time do you spend on Facebook each week?

Nil – maybe when my kids wake up to it. LinkedIn I use a lot.

What is the most unusual Christmas present that you have received from a colleague?

A valuable business book entitled ’The No As*hole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One That Isn’t’ by Robert I Sutton – all about how to deal with ’challenging’ people.

How did you spend your last bonus? (If you have never received a bonus, how would you hope to spend it in the future)?

A new bicycle to add to my ’stable’.

What are the best perks of your role?

Real flexibility with my hours and a particularly fine staff restaurant in the building.

What do you wear on dress-down Fridays?

The same as for the rest of the week – I commute by bike and anything else is too difficult logistically.

What is the most irritating habit of any partner you’ve worked for?

Persistent lateness.

How do you unwind after the end of a hard week?

Time with my family, pretending to do DIY, ferrying kids to football matches, watching sport and occasionally trying to do some and avoiding going for walks.

Do you see your colleagues on weekends?

What do you eat for lunch?

Soup and salad with bread – every day if I can – being healthy during the week makes up for the usual weekend binge.

Is your salary (in thousands) greater than your age?

What items do you always carry around with you at work?

BlackBerry, slimline wallet, moleskine notebook and, increasingly, glasses. I’d prefer to carry a nice pen but don’t any more as I keep losing them.

Of whom do you have photos on your desk?

My two boys and a wooden spoon with a photo of my own face on it from the year I came last in the office fantasy football league.

What’s your favourite local?

Kew Gardens Hotel, Sandycombe Lane in Kew.

Soy Latte or Nescafe?

Neither – I drink tea.

City break or weekend in the country?
