Italy’s Bonelli adopts three pillar strategy

Italian firm Bonelli Erede Pappalardo is pushing its partners to innovate and work more closely together following the approval of a medium-term strategic plan.

At a recent partners’ meeting the Slaughter and May best friend unanimously approved the next stage of the firm’s development, which follows moves earlier this year to axe the positions of salaried and junior equity partners and shorten the lockstep from 14 to 10 years.

Managing partner Alberto Saravalle said there were three pillars to the firm’s medium-term strategy – encouraging the institutionalisation of Bonelli within the Italian market, becoming more innovative and entrepreneurial to satisfy clients’ changing needs, and consolidating the firm’s position as an international player.

Both the restructure and the recently approved strategy are part of Bonelli’s efforts to ensure a smooth succession from the current group of senior partners to the next generation.

Saravalle said Bonelli was committed to its best friends relationship with firms including Slaughter and May, France’s Bredin Prat and Spain’s Uría Menéndez, but thought the group’s position could be expanded upon.

“I think we can offer our clients a better  model, more tailor-made to their needs in each jurisdiction,” Saravalle told The Lawyer, adding: “We want to enhance our international cooperation, particularly in extra-European markets.”

He said the strategic development of the firm would see it focusing less on individual performance and more on collective achievements. The firm will also look at greater practice group alignment.

When it comes to innovation, Bonelli will explore  new technology including social media as well as seeking to market itself more strategically to clients.

Within Italy, said Saravalle, Bonelli would seek to involve itself more with the wider community, for example by interacting with local and national government or by publishing academic and public interest papers. He said this would help turn Bonelli’s name into more of a brand.

The promotion of two new partners, litigator Paolo Di Giovanni and IP specialist Tommaso Faelli, was also approved at the recent meeting.
