This will boost its existing Madrid office and, according to the UK firm, gives its Spanish practice, Irwin Mitchell Abogados, niche expertise in data protection law.

The Madrid office will now be led by data protection specialist González Espadas, who joins the firm as partner as part of the deal. Espadas will take his banking and insurance clients with him to Irwin Mitchell.

In Spain, Irwin Mitchell has traditionally focused on its Malaga base. The acquisition signals an intent to grow its Madrid footprint with Espadas as the office’s first official chief.

He will be joined by a team of L&E’s lawyers, including litigator Javier González Espadas as part of plans to develop a strong corporate and banking practice. The deal will go live on 1 October.

Irwin Mitchell Abogados managing partner Jose Maria de Lorenzo said: “Both firms share a vision to create a respected and highly competitive firm in the Madrid market specialising in corporate, insurance and banking law.

“Our clear aim is for Irwin Mitchell Abogados to become a real leader in these specialities in the coming years.”

Irwin Mitchell managing partner John Pickering added: “This acquisition will create greater potential to grow and promote our UK-wide business, as well as providing a base for Irwin Mitchell Abogados to concentrate on expanding in the Spanish corporate market in Madrid.”

Irwin Mitchell is largely a UK-based firm,  although it does have international offices in Madrid and Malaga.

Prior to the L&E deal the firm’s most recent expansion saw it open a personal injury focused office in Bristol (16 February 2010).
