Inmarsat general counsel handed chief executive position

Satellite operator Inmarsat has promoted its group general counsel Rupert Pearce to CEO, leaving the company’s senior legal position open.

Pearce, a former Linklaters partner and head of the firm’s IPO group, takes over from Andrew Sukawaty on 1 January next year.

Inmarsat has not appointed a replacement for Pearce and a company spokesperson declined to comment on whether the appointment would be internal or from outside.

Pearce spent 13 years at Linklaters, including five as a partner and IPO head, leaving the firm to become COO and later head of corporate finance at venture capital outfit Atlas Ventures.

He joined Inmarsat in 2005 to manage the company’s IPO and later shifted his focus to overseeing its worldwide satellite communications services.
